I’ve recently noticed this group pop up on the feminism tag (http://womenagainstfeminism.tumblr.com/) and it left me confused.
Now, I don’t make any kind of secret out of the fact that I have been trying to distance myself from the Tumblr Feminist community for…
(in response to listener-blue)
Feminism doesn’t follow a doctrine. There is no fixed set of rules and regulations that we live by. You talk about Feminism as though it were some kind of religion, when in actual fact we are simple a group of individuals who chase a concept. If a Feminist does not chase gender equality in all its forms then that person is not a Feminist, regardless of whether or not they call themselves one. Whether or not you count yourself among other gender equality groups is irrelevant. If you are conscious of and against gender equality in all of its forms then you are a Feminist. If you believe that Feminists are not a group solely devoted to fighting gender equality then chances are you’ve been reading the very rubbish I detailed in my original post.
Thank you for your response. Honestly - I have described feminism as akin to a cult in the past, because of the way some feminists are. Yes, some feminists. Not all. But too many.
And unfortunately (unless you have been appointed grand high commissioner of feminism, in which case I apologise) you don’t get to decide who is and is not a feminist. It is a label which people choose to take on. You can simply call them out on their shitty behaviour, as I am seeing you doing in these posts. I wish more would follow suit.
I know there are feminists who stand for the core tenet of feminism, which is gender equality. But there are many who do not. You cannot force that label onto somebody who does not want it, and who has rejected it in part because they do not want to be associated with the shitty feminists under any circumstances. It is not your decision which label I take. There’s a reason why feminism has a bad rep - and a large part of that reason is the actions of some feminists. You can not shake that off simply by saying they are not feminists. And really, it doesn’t matter if someone uses that label or any other, so long as they stand for equality and fairness. Does it?
According to OP….
“Feminism doesn’t follow a doctrine. There is no fixed set of rules and regulations that we live by….”
Yet sie follows those statements with a list of requirements for what a “true” Feminist™ is.
Newsflash!!!! You can’t have a group with “no fixed set” of expectations AND claim that members of that group not acting according to YOU expectations aren’t a part of said group.
To give another, equally as SJW mooronic, example: “POC refers to anyone that isn’t White”…….”well except for non-White people that come from the Mediterranean area, certain Asians when comparing them to “true POC’ persons, persons from the Middle East, mixed race / culture persons that “pass” for white…..EVERYONE except them!!”
I think it would be much more helpful if Feminists™ that consider themselves “true” to the cause would actually call out the more radical elements in their own movement and name them “BAD EXAMPLE” of the movement rather than using NAFALT every time they are mentioned.
It’s worked for a few (former) Repugnicans in the U.S. …..surely it can work for Feminism™.
Feminism is merely a word used to describe a community of people with the same view on an issue. Perhaps I was wrong to call us a group, but we are a community of individuals and we remain the main driving force behind the fight for gender equality, regardless of the actions of the few short-sighted people who claim they are after gender equality and yet only really care about their own gender. Shame and put down Feminism all you want, but you’re only hindering the achievement of our one big goal and the goal of every equality loving individual.
I never gave a list of rules and regulations, I merely stated the core concept that all Feminists strive towards. Sooo many people, on this site in particular, use the Feminist banner to further the cause of their own gender, and ignoring the other areas in question.
